What’s the difference between a “real estate agent” and a “Realtor”?
Real estate agent and Realtor are not as interchangeable as some people believe. Not all Realtors are real estate agents and not all agents are Realtors. All Realtors are members of the NAR, the National Association of Realtors, and follow a strict code of ethics set forth by the association. Their code of ethics is based on consumer protection and professionalism. Random real estate agents are not required to follow these codes. If you choose a realtor you can be assured they are honest and ethical.
Multiple Listing Service
One big advantage to using a Realtor over a real estate agent is access to the MLS or multiple listing service. The MLS is a private service that Realtors use to share their listings with each other around the country. If you list with a Realtor, they will add your home to the MLS so other Realtors can see it and show them to their customers who may be interested in buying.
Home buyers and sellers both report that the biggest benefit they received from using a Realtor was help understanding the home buying/selling process. Realtors educate themselves on every aspect of the buying/selling process and use that knowledge to help you sell your home quickly at the right price and can also help you find the new home that’s right for you. Realtor don’t just sell houses, they serve their clients needs.
